The first 'pioneers' started work in a derelict slate quarry in Mid Wales in February 1974. The expression 'Alternative Technology' was coined by Peter Harper, who still works at CAT. Restoring ruined buildings, establishing gardens and generating their own electricity, a community of twenty people soon developed. The Centre for Alternative Technology is a pioneering research and demonstration centre that inspires, informs and enables people to explore new ways of living. Opening to the public back in July 1975, committed to inspiring and enabling people to live more harmoniously with nature. It has established a worldwide reputation as one of the leading organisations demonstrating ecological technologies and lifestyles. CAT presents practical solutions to environmental problems in a fun and informative way. The CAT visitor complex contains an exciting range of interactive displays on wind, water and solar power, green transport, energy efficiency, ecological building and organic growing and much more.
