Lucie Hoskings Jersey Fire and Rescue Cadets "It was very exciting.I Have never been to such a prestigious event before. The Prince was very complimentary to the people of Jersey so we owe him a big thank you. He asked how long our cadets had been going, and he was surprised to hear that we deal with real fires." Fire and Rescue cadets undertake a structured training programme comparable to that of operational firefighters. This includes training in firefighting, search and rescue, first aid, fire safety and life saving skills. This not only provides cadets with an insight into the work of the Fire and Rescue Service but also enables the development of leadership qualities and team-working skills which will be useful in other areas of their lives. Fire and Rescue cadets usually meet on a Monday evening at the Western Fire Station. Cadet evenings incorporate a wide variety of fire and rescue activities, normally commencing with a parade in uniform at the start of each session. The training syllabus is set to enable the achieving of the aims of the group through sessions including fire drills (hose, search and rescue etc), life skills, first aid, fire safety training and confidence building exercises in the form of problem solving. In addition to the activities undertaken on Monday evenings, there are opportunities for Fire and Rescue cadets to become involved in a variety of community service initiatives and community safety campaigns to increase fire safety awareness among people in the Island. The primary aim of the Fire and Rescue cadet group is to have fun and encourage the development of young people. The cadet group offers: •self-development, confidence and discipline. It provides transferable skills that will ultimately assist cadets in obtaining employment •teamwork. Cadets learn the inherent qualities of the Fire and Rescue Service •first aid and casualty care which help cadets to promote good citizenship with vulnerable people in the local community
