Old Tree Wasp nest showing the concentric layer structure built by workers around the queen wasps original nest. The nest was taken down after the colony died out in early winter. Wasps do no t reuse a nest in subsequent years. This photo shows the part of the nest (usually hidden) where it would have been attached to the wood shed roof from which it hung. It shows the concentric layers of paper built by the worker wasps around the queen wasps original small nest where she laid her first eggs. Once hatched the worker wasps continued to build and expand the nest, and tend to the eggs, lava and young, while the queen concentrated on laying eggs. Made from wood fibre chewed from old wood, fences, garden furniture etc. and mixed with the wasp's saliva; a kind of papier mache. This nest is the classic ball shape and is a realatively small specimen, only 20cm diam. It may have been abandoned during the summer as colonies do not always thrive.
