October 1996 Curdimurka South Australia Australia The Curdimurka Outback Ball The original station sign at the now disused outback railway siding Part text below Photo Simon Grosset Curdimurka ruins read my map From the air it looked more like a wild west town temporarily reborn or an African refugee camp made up of four wheel drive vehicles and green tents Smoke drifted lazily over camp sites and dotted figures made their way to and from the roofless latrines Curdimurka is in the middle of nowhere in the desert of South Australia The State s population is 1 4 million but none of them live in Curdimurka Even in it s heyday it was only a railway siding on the Old Ghan Railway the survival line linking Alice Springs in the dead heart of the continent with Adelaide Yet every two years it is the focal point for thousands of determined party goers who gather around the ruined remains of a stone cottage to party with the stars The stars of the night sky that is As our plane circled and descended the view became more cheerful At one end of the airstrip stood a huge stage the apex of a vast triangular campsite with the runway and plane park forming one side As we landed twelve people rose hands above their heads in a Mexican wave As we taxied past they stood again to award us a mark out of ten we scored eight It soon became apparent that this was the most bizarre social gathering in Australia The nearest town was 400km away the nearest city 400 km beyond that The country was flat brown and featureless Yet here were gathered 3 000 people intent on having a good time There was only one answer to the obvious question why not The ball is organised by the Old Ghan Railway Preservation Society as a fund raiser for their efforts in looking after the ruins that dot the 1500 km route of the railway line In a typically Australian way they provide the excuse and the pla
