Windmill Island Gardens in Holland, Michigan, is dedicated to Dutch heritage and culture. Among its contents are the pictured Dutch bridge in the foreground and the DeZwaan windmill (The Swan in Dutch) in the background. The over 250-year-old windmill was purchased from the Dutch government (where all windmills are considered national landmarks) and shipped to the United States from the Netherlands in 1964. The gardens were opened in 1965 after the windmill was reassembled on site. It is the only authentic working Dutch windmill in the United States. The windmill is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Each spring the gardens are the site of the community's famous annual tulip festival. The City of Holland was founded by Dutch religious separatists in 1857 and continues its strong ties to its Dutch heritage and history.
