Cigarette card with portrait of radio and film star Tommy Handley that form part of an old set from W D and H O Wills, Nottingham, part of Imperial Tobacco. Thomas Reginald ‘Tommy’ Handley (1892–1949) was a British comedian, mainly known for the BBC radio programme ITMA (‘It's That Man Again’). He was born at Toxteth Park, Liverpool in Lancashire. After World War I he went on to work in variety, and in the infancy of radio became a regular broadcaster. He worked with people such as Arthur Askey and Bob Monkhouse, and wrote many radio scripts, but it is the BBC radio comedy series ITMA for which he is best known. The show itself became known for a number of catchphrases, some of which entered popular vocabulary. These included ‘TTFN’ (Ta ta for now), ‘I don't mind if I do’, ‘After you, Claude – no, After you Cecil’, ‘Can I do you now, Sir?’ and ‘D’oh!’ (made popular by the American TV cartoon programme The Simpsons, although ITMA is credited with the earliest recorded use of the term). The 1934 set is entitled: Radio Celebrities. These sets of cards were given away singly in packets of cigarettes and were (and are still) popular collector's items - a vintage 1930s graphics for editorial use only.
