Looking from Durdle Door on the Dorset coast west to the chalk cliffs of Swyre Head, dropping down steeply to Scratchy Bottom, again rising to Bats Head, where there is a small visible hole at the base of the headland called Bat's Cave. The South West Coastal Path can be seen running up and down the rolling hills and grass lands above the cliffs. This spectacular coastal scene was made famous in the 1967 film Far from the Madding Crowd, where Gabriel Oak (Alan Bates) tends his sheep at Scratchy Bottom and the bloated sheep scene of them falling over the edge of the cliff was Swyre Head. Also a famous car advertisement created a road down the steep side of Swyre Head to film a car driving down it.There are 185 million years of the earth's geological history in a coastal area of just 95 miles from East Devon to East Dorset this is now known as The Jurassic Coast, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland and the Jurassic Coast are the only two places in the whole UK to be given this important status.
