On November 23, 1407, by order of John, the Fearless Duke of Burgundy (Burgoyne in French), Louis I de Valois, Duke of Orleans, was assassinated. Louis's older brother was king of France, Charles VI. Charles the Mad and the duke quarreled often with the Duke of Burgundy, who was the acting regent. In this illustration, the Duke of Burgundy is assassinated in 1419 on the bridge of Montereau in retaliation. This 15th-century miniature illustration is from the Chronicles of Monstrelet, which is housed in the Military Library in Paris.
