Main Altar. Altar piece by Hernando de Llanos and Hernando de la Almedina (early 16th century). Renaissance style. Above, in the apsis, the Renaissance Frescos of the Cathedral of Valencia (1472-1481). First token of Renaissance in Spain, comissioned by the archbishop of Valencia Rodrigo de Borja (aka Rodrigo Borgia, future Pope Alexander VI) to the italian artists Paolo San Leocadio and Francesco Pagano. These paintings were covered by a false Baroque dome installed in 1674 to hide its darkness created by the candles smoke. In june of 2004 refurbishment works in the Cathedral found the paintings and in February of 2007 the frescos were presented after a restoration supervised by prof. Carmen Pérez. Saint Mary of Valencia Cathedral Metropolitan Basilica. Its construction began in 1262 in Gothic style, over the ruins of the old arab Mosque.
