Birmingham, West Midlands, England – an old engraving c. 1840. A medium-sized market town in the medieval period, Birmingham grew during the Industrial Revolution, which saw the town at the forefront of a series of innovations that laid many of the foundations of modern industrial society. By 1791 it was considered to be the first manufacturing town in the world. Birmingham's distinctive economy featured thousands of small workshops practising a wide variety of specialised and skilled trades, which provided a diverse and resilient economic base for industrial prosperity that was to last into the final quarter of the 20th century. It is the largest and most populous British city outside London. Birmingham Town Hall with its neo classical Roman architecture is shown in this engraving centre left. It opened in 1834 and was one the first monumental town halls that would come to characterise the cities of Victorian England.
