Environment Secretary Michael Meacher addresses the Labour Party conference, in Brighton today (Wed). * 14/08/2001: An inquiry into Britain's worst water-poisoning incident is expected to be announced - 13 years after chemicals were accidentally dumped in the public water supply at Camelford, Cornwall. Environment minister Michael Meacher, who has taken a personal interest in the incident and visited Camelford to talk to victims last year, is set to hold a briefing on the issue at which he is expected to outline the terms of the inquiry. Campaigners have been calling for a public inquiry ever since 1988, when water supplies to 20, 000 homes were polluted by 20 tonnes of aluminium sulphate which were dumped in the wrong tank at Lowermoor treatment works. The Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has announced that the briefing would take place, but said only that Mr Meacher would be detailing the next steps on Camelford. It is understood that he will name a chairman to head an investigation into the incident and its aftermath and set out a time-table for a report to be prepared.
