Spademaker Colin Dawson at work at Patterson's Spade Mill in Templepatrick, Co Antrim. The mill was started just after the First World War and reached its peak of production in the 1940s, when it employed over a dozen men. * delivering spades, shovels and loys (long, narrow spades, with a footrest on one side of the handle) across Ireland and beyond. Crafting a spade at Pattersons was and still is a skilled business, and workers at the mill have an encyclopaedic knowledge of Ireland's 171 recognised designs of spades, and the skills that were passed from father to son. The Mill has been restored by the National Trust which runs tours of the production line and visitors can purchase a spade made at the mill, which also caters for the reshafting of spades to the surrounding comminity.
