Informations supplémentaires:
Located in Sceaux, a well healed southern suburb of Paris, is the elegant Château de Sceaux. The present château was built in a Louis XIII style in 1856-62 and so is a relatively modern building. It stands in a large park, landscaped by André Le Nôtre. The Park contains many formal gardens and parterres, an Orangerie, playgrounds, expanses of woodand, huge geometrical lakes and basins, a kilometre long “Grand Canal”, fountains, a cascade and other water features on a colossal scale. There had existed an earlier castle, built for the Potier de Gesvres family in 1597 but during the French Revolution the property was confiscated and sold off for the benefit of the nation. Later the building fell into disrepair and was demolished and crops were grown on Le Nôtre’s terraces. However some of the outbuildings, the Orangerie and a pavilion were preserved. The duc de Trévise inherited the property and set about restoring the park. Then he rebuilt the chaâteau on a more modest scale, in brick, it was designed by the architect Augustin Théophile Quantinet and built by Joseph-Michel le Soufaché. The château is now the home of the Museum of Île-de-France, and is open to the general public.
