China’s Giant Panda Research Center’s releases a captive born panda named Zhang Xiang (Thinking of Hope") into Liziping Nature Reserve November 6, 2013. She has been training at the Wolong Hetaoping Base for 26 months and was born on August 20th, 2011. During Zhang Xiang’s wildlife training, staff at the research base made sure that the cub stayed with mother panda so that she learned how to survive in the wild. From August 2011 to October 2013, Zhang Xiang completed phase one and two of her survival training. It included looking for her own food, finding her own water sources, looking for shelter, become aware of her environment to protect herself from natural enemies, live with other animals and pandas, and to run away from predators. Research staff used camouflage, infra-red video surveillance, growth and development statistics and GPS tracking to take data on Zhang Xiang’s progress. (Photo by Ami Vitale)
