In 1960, when the old Mumbai State was bifurcated into the present States of Maharashtra and Gujarat, Mumbai city fell to the share of Maharastra. It was then decided to build and entirely new capital for Gujarat. Gandhinagar, Gujarat's new capital city, rises on the west bank of the Sabarmati river, about 32 kms. north east of Ahmedabad, the commercial and cultural heart of Gujarat. Gandhinagar presents the spacious, well-organized look of an architecturally integrated city. Around the Central Government compels, stretch 30 sectors into which the city has been divided. Each sector has its own shopping and community center, primary school, health center, Government and private housing. Apart from which there is a generous provision for wide open green parks, extensive planting and a large recreational area along the river giving the city a lush green garden-city atmosphere. Gujarat (Gujarati: ગુજરાત Gujǎrāt, IPA: [gudʒ(ə)ɾat̪] (help·info)) is a state in the Republic of India. With 20% of the country's total industrial output, it is the most industrialized state in India. Gujarat borders Pakistan, and the states of Rajasthan to the north-east, Madhya Pradesh to the east, Maharashtra and the Union territories of Diu, Daman, Dadra and Nagar Haveli to the south. The international border with Pakistan is to the north-west. The Arabian Sea makes up the state's western coast. Its capital, Gandhinagar is a planned city and is located near Ahmedabad, commercial center of Gujarat.The name of the state is derived from Gujarāta (Gurjar Rāshtra), which means Gurjar nation. According to one theory, Gurjars were one of the Central Asian tribes that migrated to India beginning from around the first century BC, according to another, they are an old clan that was already present in India in the Mahabharata period.
