Built in 1849-50, this unpainted frontier-style building served as Luckenbach's postoffice until 1971. Today it's part museum, part general store, plus a rustic beer bar in an added-on building in the back. Founded as a small farming settlement, tiny Luckenbach faded into obscurity until it was bought in the 1970s by Texas humorist/character Hondo Crouch. It subsequently was made famous in a song recorded by country songwriter Waylon Jennings in 1977, with a cameo segment by Willie Nelson. Today Luckenbach is owned by Crouch family members and remains much as it has been for generations: one idiosyncratic general store with a bar in the back, a dance hall, and a small blacksmith shop, all shaded by giant oaks. Drinking, guitar-picking, washer-tossing, and just general good country fun wrap up most days here, but it can be hard to find. The Luckenbach road signs on US 290 get swiped with great regularity, and the state highway department can't keep up.
