The old Palace Hotel was originally built in 1929 merging Moorish Roman and Arab architecture under the order of Jerusalem s Supreme Muslim Council under supervision of the Mufti of Jerusalem and that of a Jewish Engineer named Baruch Katinka It was completed in just eleven months by over 500 Arab workers and became the most luxurious hotel in the Middle East with elevators a central heating system and even private bathrooms almost unheard of at the time During the British Mandate 1945 1948 the Palace served as military and administrative offices and with the establishment of The State of Israel the Ministry of Trade took up residence In recent years the structure had been abandoned Standing at the corner of Agron and King David Streets in central Jerusalem the structure has now been completely gutted The outer wall is all that is preserved of the original building Construction is scheduled to be completed by 2010 2011 The new Waldorf Astoria Palace luxury 5 star hotel will house 250 rooms 35 luxurious apartments restaurants and a swimming pool on an area of 44 000 square meters Construction costs are estimated at over 100 000 000 Shot December 2008
