Locals play volleyball on the outskirts of Kabul, Afghanistan, Wednesday February 22, 2006, as the British Army patrol the market area of the city. Thousands of hectares of poppy fields have been destroyed in southern Afghanistan as hundreds of British troops prepare for a mass deployment to the region, a senior Western diplomat said today. Supporting the Afghan government in its bid to kill the cash crop and the illegal multi-million pound industry it creates is just one of the aims of the 3, 300 UK troops who are due to be in place by the end of June. A second goal is to encourage the Afghan government's authority across the country to prevent terrorists and insurgent groups such as the Taliban using lawless areas in the south as a training ground and potential safe haven. The 3, 300 troops, part of Nato's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), will be based in the southern province of Helmand and known as the Helmand Task Force. Known as a lawless and hazardous area, the province produces 25% of the country's poppies each year. See PA Story DEFENCE Afghanistan. PRESS ASSOCIATION Photo.
