The ruins of Baconsthorpe Castle are located to the north of the village of Baconsthorpe, and to the east of Holt in Norfolk, England. The building of this fortified manor and moat was begun by Sir John Heydon in the mid 15th century, and completed by Sir Henry Heydon in 1486 who added the outer curtain wall, a gatehouse, and widened the moat. A drawbridge crossed the moat, and to the south an outer gatehouse was built c. 1560. After the English Civil War, the house fell into ruin and much of the stonework was offered for sale for building materials. The outer gatehouse was converted into a home and was used until 1920 when part of it collapsed. The ruins are constructed of flint with some brick and the curtain walls are complete and include the remains of towers, forming a 30m. square court. In the middle of the south wall are the remains of a three storey gatehouse with a two storey projection for the drawbridge. Inside and to the east are the remains of a two storey building.
