Downing College was founded in 1800 from the bequest of Sir George Downing who died in 1759 but it took more than half a century for his wish to be realized and a good proportion of the original bequest was dissipated during the legal disputes which followed his demise. The architect William Wilkins was commissioned to design a grand college for the site but this vision could not be realized because of the lack of funds and the building of the college has continued sporadically over two centuries. Among its notable alumni are the actor John Cleese and the poet Philip Hobsbaum. The picture was drawn by R B Harraden Jnr from an original by W. Wilkins and etched by Elizabeth Byrne.
