Ablatherm® HIFU is a non-invasive medical device which uses HIFU (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound) to treat localised (contained) prostate cancer. The device uses ultrasound waves which are focused with extreme precision onto the targeted cancerous cells in the prostate, causing a very brief rise in temperature (around 85 °C). The targeted tissue is then instantly and effectively destroyed, while the surrounding tissue is preserved. The patients lie on their right side and the doctor places a gel-coated probe into the patients rectum. The doctor locates the patients prostate and the area to be treated using ultrasound imaging. The treatment can then start 400 to 600 shots of high focused ultrasound rays are generally given. The treatment lasts for one to three hours.
