1832 - Born on September 8th in Cadiz, Spain. Spanish statesman and author, one of the most powerful champions of Spanish republicanism in the latter half of the 19th century. 1848 - Castelar studied at the University of Madrid, where he became professor of history and was active in politics. - He began to study law in Madrid, but soon elected to compete for admittance at the school of philosophy and letters. 1866 - Castelar was compromised in the first rising of June, which was concerted by Marshal Prim, and crushed, after much bloodshed, in the streets by Marshals O'Donnell and Serrano. 1873-1874 - He was president of the first Spanish Republic. - Ruling virtually as a dictator, he was partially successful in restoring order to the war-torn country, but he, and the republic, were overthrown by a military coup. 1875 - After the restoration of Alfonso XII he was a member of the political opposition in the Cortes. 1899 - Died on January 16th in San Pedro del Pinatar
