Europe italy Piedmont Turin Piazza Castello the Royal palace. The Royal palace started in 1646 by Royal Lady Christine of France to replace the old palace of the Bishop, still retains the facade of Charles Morello (1658). The building, a square with a courtyard, was the residence of the kings of Sardinia until 1859 and Vittorio Emanuele II, King of Italy, until 1865. The decoration and interior witness the passing of several artists who worked there from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century. Walking up the grand staircase of Domenico Ferri, 1864-1865, adorned with paintings and statues nineteenth century, with the exception of the monument to Victor Amadeus I, we reach the first floor, where the visit begins. The bronze statues of Castor (pictured at left) and Pollux guarding the entrance to the Palazzo Reale in Turin were built by Pelagio Pelagi in 1835/1839
