The Peckham Library was opened in March 2005 by the Rt Hon Chris Smith MP, former Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport. Costing £5m to build it was designed to challenge received ideas about traditional libraries being serious and staid environments. The library's construction was also part of an overall plan to regenerate the entire Peckham area. Designed by Will Alsop the building has received numerous awards including the 2000 Stirling Award for architectural innovation, the Civic Trust Award in 2002 for excellence in public architecture and the 2001 Copper Cladding Award. The library is the busiest in the London Borough of Southwark attracting some half a million visitors annually.
