Part of the West front of the Carlos Lopes Pavilion in the Parque Eduardo VII , in Lisbon. The building has panels of glazed Portugese blue and white tiles (azulejos). The building, designed by architects William and Carlos Rebello de Andrade Santos and Alfredo Asuncion, was first built in Brazil for the Great International Exhibition in Rio de Janeiro, opening May 21, 1923. It was later rebuilt in Lisbon, and called the Palace of Exhibitions. It was opened on 3 October 1932 with the Great Industrial Exhibition Portuguese. It was adapted for sports events in 1946 and the World Championship of Hockey was played there in 1947. In 1984, its name was changed to honour the Portuguese player Carlos Lopes. It is planned that the building will be transformed into the National Sports Museum with auditoriums, cafeteria, restaurant, shop, sports arena and exhibitions. This was due to start in 2009 but the building is (at Sep 2011) still unrepaired, unoccupied, and in a poor condition. The area around it is a public car park.
