Strict new ship safety regulations were recommended in a report into the loss of the bulk carrier Derbyshire in a typhoon in 1980. * The report said regulators should guarantee the survivability of all ships under extreme weather conditions. 05/04/2000 : A second inquiry into the sinking of the biggest British vessel ever lost at sea, the MV Derbyshire, begins in London. The Teesside-built 169, 000-tonne bulk carrier sank in 1980 in a typhoon in the Pacific Ocean off Japan with the loss of all 42 of its British crew and two wives. A first inquiry, in 1987, concluded that the vessel was probably overwhelmed by the forces of nature.
