Mosque, built by Sultan Sucaeddin Ilyas Bey, started June 1404. Architecturally striking with intricate carvings around doorways and windows especially. Known also as the 'Big Mosque' and the 'Friday Mosque'. Considered to be one the most striking of mosques from the era, this picture shows the carved portal. Building materials include marble from ancient Miletos. The mosque is now undergoing major reconstruction work. A fine building of large dimension that is particularly striking both externally and internally. Outside the main walls of the mosque but within the walls of the complex is a cemetery. The minaret which was present when Gertrude Bell, the explorer visited was destroyed in the earthquake of 1955.
