The American Revolution battle known as the Battle of Long Island was fought from August 27-30, 1776. Eventually, George Washington evacuated the city and retreated. During the battle, the British closed ranks on Americans, and many were killed. Under American General Sullivan was a John Callender of Massachusetts who refused to give up the fight. When he saw the gunners begin to leave their guns, he shouted, "Stop!" They did, but then fled as the British came closer. As Callender rammed a charge, a British bayonet was level at his chest. Then, a British officer, admiring his courage, stopped his men from killing Callender and took him prisoner. Later, he was exchanged, and General Washington called to meet so brave a patriot.
