Deputy Prime Minister, John Prescott at a Labour party press conference at Westminster, ahead of tomorrow's local elections. Mr Prescott said "Today is May 1, five years ago a Labour government was elected with the biggest parliamentary majority ever". 18/07/02 : Plans to build thousands of affordable homes for key workers including nurses, police officers and firemen were being outlined today in the Commons by Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott. The move comes after Chancellor Gordon Brown's announcement on Monday of an increase of more than 1 billion for housing and planning. 28/10/02: Rural public services in England are under threat from major reforms of the council grant system which are planned by Mr Prescott, local authorities warned Monday October 28, 2002. The warning came in a report from the Rural Services Partnership, a cross-party coalition of more than 50 of England s most sparsely populated councils. The document argued that the reform proposals currently on the table ignored rural deprivation and took too little account of the extra cost of providing services to scattered and remote country communities. It pointed to evidence of the additional expense partnership member councils faced because of distance and the lack of economies of scale.
