The Second Annual Historic Golf Plus Fours Tournament was held at Jekyll Island's Walter Travis designed nine-hole Great Dunes golf course on November 11, 2006. Worldwide, a growing number of enthusiastic golf purists compete in Hickory Shaft tournaments, with a good dozen championship events across the U.S. typically drawing 50-100 entrants for 2-3 day tournaments. Golf Societies dedicated to preservation of hickory golf history estimate that a host of smaller, regional outings attract 3, 000-4, 000 golfers who play at least one retro game a year. These events are often called "Plus Fours" tournaments, in reference to the sports slacks that were becoming fashionable beginning in the 1860s. Their name derives from being cut 4 inches below the knee - four inches longer than traditional knickerbockers.
