Informations supplémentaires:
Play streets were a product of the Street Playgrounds Act 1938. They were intended to provide safer streets for children to play in at a time when increasing numbers of motor vehicles on the roads were seen as an increasing danger to children, especially in inner city streets that had traditionally been used as play areas. Play streets signs originally stated “Play Street - vehicles prohibited sunrise to sunset unless calling at premises in the street”. It was an offence for through traffic to use a play street during the prohibited hours. (The Street Playgrounds Act was superseded by the provisions of the Road Traffic Act 1960.) Beatrice Street was the first Play Street in Liverpool, designated in 1948, and although a sign survives, it is a more recent design. But even without parked cars, it seems that kids just don’t play in the streets anymore.
