Staithes is a small, working fishing village on the North East coast about 11 miles north of Whitby. Of all the fishing villages along this area of coast, it is perhaps the least changed. It was once one of the largest fishing ports on the north east coast, as well as an important source of minerals such as jet, iron, alum and potash. Today, the village with its quaint cottages nestled between towering cliffs is an attractive holiday destination set on the dramatic Yorkshire Coast within the North York Moors National Park. Once home to locally built boats and a small fleet of traditional Whitby Cobles (designed to be launched and landed on the beach) the harbour is now home to a small number of boats used by local fishermen to catch cod, lobsters and crabs. Some vessels offer short pleasure cruises and are available for day charter for sea angling. Here, on a hot July day, we are looking back at Staithes from the outer end of the harbour wall. A small boat is returning after a sea angling trip. The wake reveals the wide sweeping entrance it has made.
