Cheetahs are classified in their own subfamily Acinonyxchinae, Cheetahs have long legs and run down their prey rather than stalking it. King Cheetah's are rare with world population of under 30 animals with only 10 of those believed to be in the wild in a few remote areas of Zimbabwe and Southern Africa. The Dewildt Reseach Centre in Pretoria started their "King Cheetah" breeding in the early 1980's . This year (2010) at the Tshukudu Reserve in the Kruger National Park we spent some time photographing this wonderful animal and was in the reserve with the intent of breeding but so far she has turned down all candidates to date although she has taken a liking to one Cheetah in particular, so there is a glimmer of hope.
