The Avro 504 was derived from the 1912 Avro 500, the 504made it`s debut in September 1913.As such it was the forerunner of a total of 8, 340 504, s to be produced in World War 1 alone, and the start of two decades of RFC/RNAS/RAF use of the basic type.Though used briefly as a bomber by the RNAS and RFC in the early weeks of the war, the 504 is best remembered as a basic traine, in particular the 504J variants used by the Gosport School of Special Flying, and the 504k versions which, provided most initial instruction in the post-1918 RAF, until superseded by yet another variant the 504N Lynx from 1927-33.During 1918 five squadrons in the UK were equipped with armed, single seat converted 504KS for Home Defence duties.Acrobatic qualities of the 504 were epitomised in the early 1930s at the annual Hendon Displays.
