Millions of people throughout the world lack enough water for their basic hygiene or for drinking and preparing food. Where groundwater and surface water sources are in short supply, rainwater may be a sustainable alternative or supplement. Harvesting of rainwater is the collection of water for domestic or commercial use that would otherwise go down the drain, into the ground or be lost through evaporation. Various techniques have been practised for thousands of years to collect and store water, especially in areas of low rainfall. Rainwater collection removes the need for the energy and chemicals used to produce pure drinking water and reduces the energy, pollution and CO2 emissions levels produced by pumping mains water. It lessens water demand on rivers and groundwater. Large-scale collection of rainwater would reduce the risk of flooding. And, with water prices rising year on year, it would cut the cost of domestic and business water.
