These images were shot directly in the middle of the path of totality, 1km north of Tryon, Nebraska. This eclipse known as the "Great American Eclipse" was the first time in nearly a century that a rare solar eclipse spanning across the middle of the U.S would occur. Millions of people in the days leading up to and morning of August 21st 2017 drove directly into the path of totality to witness this spectacle of nature. These images were taken using a Canon 800mm F5.6 lens with a special solar filter (removed during totality) on a Canon 5DSr 50 megapixel body. While I have chased hundreds of storms, seen dozens of tornadoes, this was my first total solar eclipse and it was perhaps one of the most spectacular natural phenomenon I have ever seen to date. During this trip, I drove from Toronto, Canada to Nebraska over the course of two days along a route I had planned months in advance with hotels that I had booked several months prior. Despite the fears of traffic chaos, the drive to the eclipse was uneventful, however the drive to South Dakota for a mini-vacation immediately after the eclipse was more about standing still motionless on a roadway than actually moving as hundreds of thousands of vehicles proceeded to leave the path of totality. I was fortunate in that I had not only planned ahead and filled my vehicle and two 20L jerrycans with fuel the morning of the eclipse, but I also drive a diesel vehicle which garners in excess of 1000km per tank. Most of the vehicles which required fuel that were either stalled on the roadway or waiting in long lines at fuel stations were gasoline powered. Despite the slow traffic I was able to comfortably drive to my hotel for the night, some 700km away from the path of totality without the need for fuelling once. The following day as I drove to South Dakota, the traffic had abated and all was back to normal. In this set, sunspots, prominence's, solar flares, the corona, moon, penumbra and umbra are all visible.
