Informations supplémentaires:
The Church of the Ascension was given to the village of Woodlands in Dorset by Harriet, Countess of Shaftesbury, in memory of her late husband Anthony, the 8th Earl of Shaftesbury. The church was designed by G.F.A. Bodley R.A. and dedicated in 1892. Seen from the outside the church appears a plain unprepossessing brick building, but the interior is striking, with idiosyncratic decoration and an eclectic collection of ornaments and artworks. Also the church has a most unusual architectural structure. Three central columns supporting the roof form arcading down the middle of the nave, and as far as is known, the only other church built in this way is a 14th century building in Hannington in Northamptonshire. The mural on the south chancel wall was painted by Charles Frederick Cooper Knapp, who was an amateur artist, and it shows his conception of the Resurrection. Unfortunately the wall seems not to have been properly “treated” before the painting was executed and now there is considerable peeling and deterioration. The church is a grade II listed building.
