Water Street, between Jay and Pear Streets, Brooklyn Dumbo, New York, USA
Informations supplémentaires:
This area of Brooklyn was primarily a manufacturing district housing warehouses and factories that made machinery, card-board boxes and Brillo soap-pads. With the decline of manufacturing industry, the area was increasingly gentrified as artists moved in in the late 1970s and the area became largely residential. The acronym 'Dumbo' ('Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass') dates to 1978. In 2007 Dumbo was designated New York's 90th historic district. Increasing property prices in Manhattan in the 1990s helped photomusic art studios, galleries, indie film shops, fashion/furniture showrooms and band practice spaces locate there. This street mural was painted in 2009 by an artist group named '303 Collectives' after their studio number at 135 Plymouth Street. The mural depicts images of life moving through a bamboo forest, the general message being that our interactions with each other can create a community of harmony. Wolves lurking in the corners of the painting, representing negatives, symbolise life's surroundings. Two angels represent guidance and protection from life's barriers. Two Ganesh-style elephants (one partial, one full body) symbolise the Hindu elephant deity of success and the remover of obstacles. Two other elephants, passing each other, one having ears like speakers, symbolise communication. The painting bears artists' signatures: 'Demon 202' and 'Cam'. The mural was painted with permission from the wall owner.
