The Quiet Man is a 1952 American Technicolor romantic comedy-drama film. It was directed by John Ford and starring John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara, Victor McLaglen and Barry Fitzgerald. It was based on a 1933 Saturday Evening Post short story by Maurice Walsh. The film is notable for its lush photography of the Irish countryside and the long, climactic, semi-comic fist fight between Wayne and McLaglen.The Quiet Man Bridge is located 5 miles passed Oughterard, down the Sky Road, which was the setting for the 1950's film "The Quiet Man" starring John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara. The bridge is set in a bit to the left but is visible from the road and is clearly signposted. It is a major tourist attraction, since it featured in the film "The Quiet Man". The film is regarded as one of the top 100 films ever made. Americans and Japanese tourists by the busload stop to photograph it. Local wags say they are being conned: so many stones have been taken overseas as trophies that the bridge must have been rebuilt at least three times! Leam Bridge, as it is known locally, is in a condition almost identical to 1951. This is the bridge where Sean Thornton dreams of his youth in the opening scenes of the movie and hears his dead mother's voice describing White O'Morn cottage.
