This particular building is playing host to an art exhibition. Information taken from the Shuffle handout. St Clements Hospital, Mile End, London is playing host to visitor open days and events within the community. One such event is the “Shuffle festival”. This runs from 8th August until 18th August 2013. This event is the first expression of the long term aspiration to demonstrate the viability of community uses in St Clements and the John Denham building, located to the front of the site on Mile End Road. The St Clements Social Club, this summer, is a revival of the once existing club that operated on the site at St Clements Hospital and a former psychiatric facility. The club was originally set up as a place where hospital patients could engage in alternative forms of therapy. The aim of the club was to provide somewhere to have fun – a simple yet revolutionary goal in a place dominated by isolation and observation. The patients watched theatre, played badminton, wrote and performed poetry and set up summer fates. This summer the re-opened St Clements Social Club will be extended to include the local community and visitors from further afield, until the building works require that the premises are vacated. The East London Community Land Trust (ELCLT) is a non profit local membership organization. Anyone who lives or works in East London can join. They are governed by their members. Their mission is to ensure access to permanently affordable housing for the people of East London and the creation of thriving local communities through the democratic stewardship of land. The St Clements site, ELCLT will become the UK’s first urban community land trust.
