'United States of North America (Eastern & central)'. Artist/engraver/cartographer: Drawn & Engraved by T. Ettling. Provenance: "Cassell's Complete Atlas" (a.k.a. "The Weekly Dispatch Atlas"), Published by Cassell, Petter and Galpin, London [Dispatch US maps]. Type: Antique map with original outline colour. This map was originally printed on two separate sheets which have been physically or digitally joined; a slight discontinuity may exist along the join. The map depicts the United States as divided in the early part of the Civil War between the Union states, the Confederate states, and the Border states. Also marked are the areas inhabited by native American tribes, and the routes proposed for trans-continental railroads, including routes "explored for the Pacific Railroad" by Captain Gunnison and Lieutenant Beshwith, "Proposed Pacific Railroad", and "Governor Stevens Route and Line of the Proposed Pacific Railroad".
