HALF MAN WALKS AGAIN Here's half-man Peng Shulin delighted to be sporting his first pair of trainers - and legs - in over ten years. With his body severed into two halves in a horrific accident - he took the full impact of a full-loaded freight lorry in 1995 - doctors had little hope for the little man. Over 20 doctors fought to save his life, but not even the combined might of specialist medical staff could save his lower half. Skin was grafted from his head to seal his torso, and what was left of Shulin was 78 centimetres in total. He was bedridden for years, but recently began exercising his arms, building up the strength to carry out everyday chores like washing his face and brushing his teeth. Clever folk at the China Rehabilitation Research Centre found out about Shulin's plight late last year and devised a plan to get him back on his feet again. They made a special egg-like casing to hold his body, and he now trundles along with the aid of his specially adapted bionic legs and resized zimmer frame. (JC/WN/IG)
