Sotheby's Senior Old Masters Specialist George Gordon views 'The Massacre Of The Innocents' by Peter Paul Rubens which has gone unrecognised for more than two centuries and is expected to fetch up to 6 million when auctioned later in the year by Sotheby's. * Peter Paul Rubens, a Flemish artist and also a draughtsman and ambassador, painted the work in Antwerp some time between 1609 and 1611, although the picture had been wrongly attributed to a Rubens follower, Frans de Neve. The biblically-inspired work, which vividly depicts the moment when soldiers carry out King Herod's orders to kill all new-born boys to stop the new messiah, will go under the hammer in July. 10/07/02 : An unknown Rubens painting tonight smashed the record for the most expensive painting ever bought, or sold, in sterling at an auction. The Massacre of the Innocents, painted between 1609 and 1611, was sold for 49, 506, 650. It was expected to reach between 4 to 6 million but was bought for the record-breaking price by a private collector in the auction room. The painting depicts the moment when King Herod ordered the slaughter of all newborn boys to get rid of the Messiah. The painting and its 17th century Antwerp surrounding wooden panel are still in near perfect condition. Tonight's purchase beats the sale of Vincent van Gogh's Portrait of Doctor Gachet which went under the hammer at Christie's in New York for 44, 378, 696.
