This variety of tomato (Cristal) is the only one of four varieties in my greenhouse border which has been affected by blossom end rot, despite them all receiving identical watering, feeding etc. This problem is generally believed to be caused by a lack of calcium in the fruits, as a result of an irregular water supply. It seems that this variety may be more prone than my other varieties, such as Moneymaker, Super Marmande and Mountain Magic. Having said that, the remaining healthy Cristal tomatoes have an outstanding flavour. UPDATE: Following this early crop of effected tomatoes which were picked in early July, the remaining fruit were blemish-free, and I continued to pick superb fruits weighing up to half a pound (227 grams )each as late as early October.
