The Golden Lane is a series of small houses within Prague Castle that were built along the inside of one of the outer walls, in the 16th century. The original inhabitants of the lane were mostly goldsmiths, but later the street was given to the 24 fusiliers who guarded the castle. Due to a lack of space, they had to built very small little homes for their families, lending them the dollhouse-like look that's so appealing about them today. 11 of the houses remain today, and over the past couple of centuries they've housed many people of varying occupations and social classes. Franz Kafka famously lived in No. 22 (the blue house in the foreground) in 1916-17.
