Snowy Waxcap fungi (hygrocybe virginea) Cap Diameter 10-30mm Stem Height 20-50mm Stem Diameter 2-4mm A small white fungus that has a greasy feel found in small trooping groups on soil amongst grass in cropped pastures and in open woodland. The UK has some of the finest waxcap grasslands in Europe and is home to half of the world’s pink or ‘ballerina’ waxcaps, which are often found on lawns. There are around forty other waxcap species in Britain and Ireland. Look for them on grassland around historic houses and monuments. Churchyards are also good places. Waxcaps like short, moss-rich grassland. Heavily fertilised fields are not good sites. Waxcap toadstools are indicators of ancient grassland – an increasingly rare wildlife habitat. The milk-coloured waxcap (see photo) is more common. Its cap is slimy and, when young, is domed. The cap flattens and becomes concave with age.
