Waimangu Volcanic Valley near Rotorua, New Zealand
Informations supplémentaires:
The name 'Waimangu' means 'black waters' in Maori. This is the only hydrothermal system where the precise commencement of surface activity is known: 10 June 1886. Waimangu and Rotomahana are internationally important as the only current NZ example of a biosystem ire-establishing in an area following total devastation and for the unique geothermal systems developing within craters. Management of this scenic protected reserve is by sustainable environmental tourism practises. This includes conservation management, visitor impact management, safe access, a high standard of interpretation and the provision of international standard amenities and services. It was the location of the Waimangu Geyser which was active from 1901 to 1904. The complex has won several awards over the years.
