Informations supplémentaires:
Blair Castle has been the ancient home and fortress of the Earls and Dukes of Atholl for over 725 years. Situated in the wide Strath of Garry, it commands a strategic position on the main route through the Central Scottish Highlands. Seat of the Dukes of Atholl. Originally built by the Comyn family, Blair Castle itself dates back to 1269 but has been much modified in the centuries since, most of the present castle being 18-19thC. Mary Queen of Scots stayed here in 1564. Garrisoned by the Marquis of Montrose in 1644 but almost destroyed by Cromwellian forces in 1653. John Graham of Claverhouse was brought there after his death at nearby Battle of Killiecrankie in 1689. Castle was besieged again in 1745-46 by both Government and the Jacobite forces of Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie). This was the last seige of a castle anywhere in the UK. Queen Victoria stayed in 1844 In appreciation of the vigilence of the Athollmen who attended her, she granted the 5th Duke and his men her colours and the right to bear arms. This was how the Atholl Highlanders came into being, and today they are the only remaining private army in Europe. During the First War, the Castle was used as a hospital. In the Second, it became home to a prep school and Glasgow evacuees. When the 9th Duke died childless in 1957, the title passed sideways to Iain Murray, a direct descendant of the 3rd Duke.
