This grey and white seabird is related to the albatrosses. A superb flier, it can be seen gliding and banking low over the sea on stiff wings. At its breeding sites it will fly high up the cliff face, riding the updraughts. Fulmars defend their nests by spitting out a foul-smelling oil which will matt the plumage of avian predators, and can lead to their death. They cope with the high amount of sea water that they imbibe by using a salt gland above the nasal passage to help desalinate their bodies, excreting a strong saline solution from their nose.
