Glacier National Park was created in 1937 to preserve a large area of continental ice, Andean mountains, cool forests, glaciers and large glacial lakes. It extends over 600.000 hectares located in the southwest of the province of Santa Cruz. Because of its spectacular beauty, glaciological and geomorphological interest, and part of its wildlife is threatened with extinction, UNESCO declared "World Heritage Site" in 1981. The highlight of this park is its ice fields, which together cover an area of approximately 2, 600 km ², more than 30% of the area of the park is covered by ice. There are 47 major glaciers. The best known is the Perito Moreno glacier, which expands upon the waters of the South Branch Lake Argentino, with a front of 5 km. and a height of 60 meters. Upsala Glacier, located on the north branch of the same lake, is the largest, with a length of 50 km and a width of about 10 km.
